Example: planning a neighbourhood book swap

A dummy article showing the details a small community gathering could include.

Give the gathering a simple purpose

This fictional book swap is an example of a community notice. It describes neighbours bringing one book they are ready to pass on and choosing another to take home. There is no real organiser, venue, event date or registration behind this article.

A real organiser would decide which books are suitable, how the exchange works and whether children need an accompanying adult. Those details belong in the notice rather than in a private message after someone has already travelled to the venue.

Think about arrival and access

In a real notice, people would need the public venue name, area and city, the start and finish time, and clear information about accessibility. A small gathering can still be difficult to attend if the entrance, seating or lift arrangements are unclear. Do not invent accessibility claims; check them with the venue.

If there is a limit on space, explain how attendees can learn whether a place is available. Avoid publishing a list of participants or their phone numbers. The marketplace does not provide ticket sales or attendance management.

Keep the collection manageable

An organiser might separate children’s books, fiction and reference books so people can browse quickly. A short description of accepted condition would help people decide what to bring. This article illustrates writing choices, not a promise that a specific book will be available.

The same care applies to photos. Use an image of books you have permission to photograph, not a picture containing children or private addresses. Tell attendees what will happen to books left over at the end.
